When children consistently exhibit difficult or disruptive behaviors at home, at school, or in social environments, it can be challenging for parents to determine the best approach to support and redirect their child in a manner that fosters feelings of love, encouragement, and empowerment. This enables the child to manage their behavior independently in healthy ways.
This is where parental behavior training can play a crucial role as a focused therapy, equipping parents with practical skills and strategies that aid their child in thriving academically, nurturing relationships, and enhancing their mental and emotional well-being.
Parental Behaviour Training (PBT) supports children and their families by recognising that parents have the greatest influence on their young child’s behaviour. Our psychologists will often begin PBT by conducting an extended interview with parents to explore the current difficulties the child is experiencing, as well as what behavioural management strategies are currently being used, and how the behavioural difficulties may be affecting different parent-child-sibling dynamics within the household.
Young children often do not have the skills to change their own behaviour without their parents’ help, so our psychologists can use PBT to work collaboratively with parents, and teach them skills to enhance their relationships with their child, decrease problem behaviours, increase desired behaviours.
Our psychologists work to support the unique needs of your family, but therapy may often involve:
Studies show that PBT is proven to be effective in reducing disruptive behaviours and aggression, and in improving child compliance, parenting discipline skills, and parenting self-efficacy among other benefits. Participating in parental behaviour training may take time and effort, but it can have incredible and life-changing benefits for your child and your family, throughout adolescence and beyond.
